BEHIND THE SONG
This inspiration behind this song was in my being called up for jury duty. Whenever we are called to do “our civic duty", it's usually met with a series of moans and statements like “just lie to get out of doing it". While sitting in the room where they decide if you're to be selected or not, I thought about the irony of jurors languishing the idea of getting picked while the defendant’s life was in the hands of people who didn’t want to be there. After all, the juror’s decision could and probably would affect that person for the rest of their life.
I don’t remember how I came up with the main guitar riff but I remember I wanted it to be “Madchester” sounding. And I really wanted to have the chorus soaring. As the song goes along, it gets more urgent and then goes off with some crazy changes at the end, including a tricky time change. The ending solo was done with an Ebow, which Frunkie le Bassist gave me as a gift that year. Overall, this was a bit more complex of a song due to the changes and I couldn’t have attempted this song without Frunkie and Magic Mike.
