BEHIND THE SONG:

Channeling Will Sergeant, guitarist for Echo and the Bunnymen, I came up with the riff and chords first on My House before adding the bass line in rapid succession, as I recall. Then it was time to come up with some appropriate lyrics and, of course, I procrastinated by checking email.

My neighborhood listserv kindly helped me out at that moment in supplying inspiration. A neighbor, thankfully no one I knew, complained to the group that someone was parking a car in front of their house. This was unacceptable and the neighbor wondered if they should call the police to have the car towed. As others in the group pointed out, there were no parking restrictions on the street in question.

That was all it took and the lyrics tumbled out fully formed, pretty close to the final version recorded in the song.

The real world example of someone apparently believing they owned parking rights in front of their house led to the more extreme idea of prohibiting kids from playing there too. And there were neighbors in my childhood I dreaded a football or other toy ending up in their yard for fear of never being allowed to retrieve it.

Magic Mike worked his magic in providing the driving beat, and Steady Eddie upped the ante with his guitar playing and production knob twiddling.

My House was recorded in the front parlor of the Cunningham House in Jefferson Country, Georgia.
